Perhaps The First Choice Was
Better
[ Go to Tips and Quips Menu ]
In 1943 (during World War II), a
couple named Mittel in Astoria, New York, named their baby Adolf Hitler Mittel.
Newspapers picked up the story, and public pressure became so great that the
little boy was renamed.
This time the choice was Theodore
Roosevelt Mittel.
Twenty-nine years later, in the
Bulletin of the American Names Society, Robert N. Rennick reported the sad story
of what happened to Theodore as he grew older. At the age of nine he was
arraigned for pushing a six-year-old off a pier, causing the child to drown.
At sixteen, when arrested as the leader of a burglary gang, he pointed an
automatic at a policeman. But that gun, as well as a zip gun, was taken
from him by another officer. Charged with eighty-five burglaries, Theodore
Roosevelt Mittel was sentenced to a reformatory. Out on parole, he stole a
truck, and a little later he was indicted on two counts of grand larceny and
sentenced to Sing Sing.
