ADELHEIDIS.  From Teutonic adel "noble" and heidis "condition," hence "a noble person."  A name that produced numerous popular contractions, such as Alice and Adelaide.  Also spelled Adalheidis. (Praenomina, Charnock, 1882; History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).

    "In the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen.  We, Mechtildis (Matilda) mistress, Adelheidis (Adelaide) sub-prioress, and the other sisters assembled in the house called of Innenheim in Strasburg, whose names are as follows..." (Woman's Work in the Church, Ludlow, 1866).
