ÆTHELIND.  Anglo-Saxon name, composed of Old English æðel "noble" and lind "serpent, snake," hence "noble snake." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).  Or, it may mean "noble and mild"; see Charnock's note under Ethelind.  Swan renders it "noble maiden." (Girls' Christian Names, Swan, 1905).  And see Adelinda, and Adalinda.
