ALICE.
A contraction of Adeliza
(q.v.), from Adelaide
(q.v.), variously rendered "noble person," "noble
cheer" "noble maiden."
Alice is our true
English form (of German Adelheid),
though it has been twisted into Alicia, and then referred for derivation
to the Greek Alexios, so as often to appear in Latin documents of the
later middle ages in the form Alexia; whereas in earlier times, before
its origin was forgotten, it is translated by Adelicia,
Adelisa, or Adelidis. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
