ALLATU. Babylonian-Assyrian
goddess who was originally a consort of Bel
(q.v.) of Nippur, then afterwards associated in turn with Ninazu and Nergal
(q.v.).
Allatu is the chief goddess of
the subterranean cave in which the dead dwell, and seems sometimes, like
Nergal, to have been depicted as a lion. As mistress of the
underworld, she is regarded sometimes as the authoress of evil, though as
a personification of the "earth" she seems also to have been
considered a goddess of fertility. The El-Amarna tablets seek to
explain Nergal's position in the world of the dead by the legend of a
conflict between Nergal and Allatu. In the end she offers to marry
him, and he spares her life. The legend seems to have been framed in
imitation of the Marduk-Tiamat story. (An
Encyclopedia of Religions, Canney, 1921)
