ANAÏTIS (Ἀναίτις).
Greek form of Persian Anahita
(q.v.), meaning "pure,
spotless, taintless." It also has the Armenian form Anahid
(q.v.).
Anahid or Anaïtis was a Persian
goddess, chiefly worshipped in Armenia... She is often alluded to in the
Avesta as Anāhita, pure, spotless, e.g. in the Aban Yasht v.4,
ardivī
çūra Anāhita, "the welling mighty Taintless" goddess.
(The Life and Times of S. Gregory the Illuminator, &c., Malan,
1868)
Anaitis,
a Semitic
goddess of a warlike character, somewhat approaching the Bellona of
classic mythology. She was represented as a naked woman standing
on a lion, and sometimes on a crocodile, holding a spear or bow, and
wearing a peculiar crown formed of tall feathers. Her worship was
introduced into Egypt probably about the time of Rameses II. after his
Syrian victories, one of his daughters, Bentanath, being named after the
goddess.
Anaitis, a feminine form of the great deity Mithra,
as introduced into the Median religion when corrupted from
Zoroastrianism. She was in some respects analogous to the Mylitta
of the Babylonians, which see. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
