APOLLONIA (Ἀπολλωνία). Feminine form of Greek Apollonios
(q.v.) and Latin Apollonius
(q.v.), meaning "of Apollo." Apollonia is mentioned in
Classical and Biblical texts. It was the name of an
Alexandrian maiden whose martyrdom began by the extraction of all her
teeth. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
Appoline
was the usual name in England, as Appoline in France, for Apollonia,
a martyr at Alexandria, who, among other tortures, had all her teeth
beaten out. (Curiosities of Puritan Nomenclature, Bardsley, 1880)
