AUIZA.  Both Auiza and Avicia are found in the Liber Vitæ Ecclesiæ Dunelmensis (Surtees Society).  Auiza occurs on p. 53, and is referred to about the beginning of the thirteenth century. (Notes and Queries, v.11, 1897).  Its original form Ferguson takes to be Gothic Avagisa (q.v.), an 8th-century name, meaning "ancestor-hostage." (Surnames as a Science, Ferguson, 1883)
