In the Talmud (Horayot 14a), Abaye is the name of a Hebrew scholar, surnamed Nachmani, born about 280 A.D.; died 339.  He was director of a Jewish academy at Pumbeditha in Babylonia 333-338, and was held in high esteem for his learning and upright character...
