of a celebrated Arab chief, born near Mascara, Algeria, 1807: died at
Damascus, May 26, 1883. He was the heroic leader of the Arabs in the
wars in Algiers against the French 1832-47, and prisoner of the French
1847-52. He lived in later years principally at Damascus as a
