ABD-EL-KADIR (عبد القادر).
Arabic name,
composed of Abd "servant,
slave," Al/El
"the," and Kadir
"capable, powerful," hence "servant of
the powerful one."
Abd-el-Kadir, born near
Mascara, Algeria, about 1807. His father, Mehi-ed-Deen, was a
Maraboot (Marabout) or religious noble of great influence. Having
become distinguished for his piety and talents, he was chosen emir of
the Arab tribes in Algeria soon after that region was invaded by the
French in 1830... He excelled in martial exercises. As an
equestrian he was unrivalled, even among a people whose warriors may be
said to live on horseback. His quickness of intellect and his
memory were extraordinary. At the age of fourteen he already knew
the Koran by heart... He died at Damascus, May 26, 1883. (Universal
Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography and Mythology, Thomas, 1915)
