From Hebrew ebed, "servant," is formed Abdeel, or
Abdiel,
"servant of God." Also see Abdi-ili.
... It is familiar to readers of Milton as the name
chosen by him for the single angel who, among the hosts of Satan, refused
to join in his rebellion:—
"Among the faithless,
faithful only he."
And allusion is made to the
etymology of the name in the words supposed to be addressed to him from
the heavenly throne,
"Servant of God,
well done; well hast thou fought."
