ABIJAH. [Heb.
Abhiyahu = "to whom Jehovah is a father"].
This name is used once (2 Chron.
xxix. 1) as an alternate spelling for feminine Abi.
Abijah Gilbert (d. 1881), was a U.S. Senator from
Florida. (Wiki)
(1)
A son of Jeroboam. While yet a child he fell dangerously sick, and
Jeroboam sent his queen in disguise to the prophet Abijah, the same who
had predicted that he should obtain the kingdom, to inquire what the issue
of the sickness would be. The prophet recognised the queen,
notwithstanding her disguise, denounced judgment against Jeroboam for his
apostacy from Jehovah, and added that the child would die, and obtain
honorable burial, because in him alone of all that household was found
some good thing towards the Lord God of Israel. All happened as the
seer had foretold (1 Kings 14:1-18).
(2) The name given in Chronicles
to the son and successor of Rehoboam, called in Kings Abijam (q.v.)
"a person of maritime tendencies." (The Sunday School
Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
