ADMINIUS. Latinized
form of Celtic At-Minos, meaning "devotee to Minos" or "votary of Minos."
The import
of this Celtic name is At-Minos, i.e. the devotee to, or the
votary of, Minos. The father of Cunobeline, according to the
ancient British Chronicles, is invariably represented as a most
rigid observer and administrator of justice. The Chronicles
appear to be worthy of credit in relating this; and it may be regarded
to have been to please his father in his ideas, that he named one of his
sons Adminius, or "a votary of Minos," a person who had been
in his day one of the most celebrated lawgivers of antiquity...
The name of Adminius on coins is Amminus, and at
other times Aedd, which we know is by no means an unusual Celtic name,
and according to Richards (see his Dictionary) is the same as the
Latin appellation Aëtius. (Celtic
Inscriptions on Gaulish & British Coins, Poste, 1861)
