ADNAN. "Engrafted."
A king of the Hejaz, who, attempting to stop the inroads of Nebuchadnezzar
in Arabia, was by him defeated at the battle of Dhat Irak, and compelled
to fly into the mountains, where he died. He was succeeded by his
son, Maad.

Cahtan, i.e. Yoctan, a lineal descendant from Noah. The Cahtanians
were esteemed pure and original Arabs; whilst the descendants of Ishmael,
under the name Adnan, were called engrafted Arabs; his progenitors being
