ADRAHASIS. Adrahasis,
a man of Surippak, and son of Ubaratutu,
the patriarch to whom,
according to the Deluge Tablet, the gods revealed the secret of the
impending deluge, and who erected an ark accordingly, whereby he and his
family and sevens of all clean beasts were saved. His name, when
transposed, is believed to be the origin of the Greek name Xisuthrus.
Its meaning appears to be, "shut up in a box or ark," from the
two characters signifying "enclosed," and "box,"
respectively. In Accadian he is called Tam-zi (Tammuz),
"the Sun of life." (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper,
1876).
Another explanation makes it a Babylonian form of Assyrian Khasis-adra
(which see), possibly meaning "great intelligence," i.e. "the Sage." (Transactions of the
Society of Biblical Archaeology, v.4, 1876).
