ADRAMMELECH. Biblical.
[Hebrew Adrammelek
(אַדְרַמֶּלֶךְ) = "magnificence of (the) king" (Gesenius); more
probably from Adar-malik,
"Adar is prince" or "fire king"].
(1) An idol
of Sepharvaim to which the colonists brought from that city to Samaria
burnt their children in the fire (2 Kings xvii. 31). Sayce (Assyria,
p. 66) believes that the idol was King Adar, the son of Beltis, one of
the deities formed by worshipping the sun god under some particular
attribute.
(2) A son of Sennacherib. With another brother
he murdered his father, and afterwards escaped to Armenia (2 Kings xix.
37; Isa. xxxvii. 38). (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual,
Hunter, 1894)
