ÆLRIC. Anglo-Saxon
name, composed of the Old English elements eall "all,
every," and rīce "reign, rule," hence "all powerful."
... We take it for granted that
Alaric (Elrich or Ulrich) the Goth could not have spelled his own
name; but where is the necessity for putting it to us nowadays (when, if
they wish, people may all know how to spell) in the six forms of Alrick,
Allrick, Alrich, Albrich, Aldridge and Eldridge?
Aelric, the Saxon form of the word, meant all powerful. (The
American Catholic Quarterly Review, Corcoran, v.12, 1887)
