ÆTHELHARD.  Variant form of Anglo-Saxon Aethelheard (q.v.), composed of the Old English elements æthel, "noble," and heard, "firm, hard," hence "nobly stern."  The Anglicized form is Ethelhard. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)

A.D. 790.  On the 2d of the ides of August [12th Aug.], Iainbert, archbishop of Canterbury, died; and abbot Aethelhard was elected to succeed him... (The Church Historians of England, Stevenson, v.2, 1853)
