ÆTHELRIC. Anglo-Saxon
name meaning "noble ruler," from Old English æðel
"noble" and rīce "reign, rule." It
is the same as Gothic Athalaric,
and German Adelrich. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
... Ida had twelve sons, of
whom no less than five succeeded him on the throne. The list of
these short-lived kings, Adda, Frithwulf or Frithwald, Hussa, Theodoric
and Aethelric is given in different order by the Historia
Brittonum, the chronicle appended to Bede's history, and the later
authorities—a fact which may point to a division of the kingdom
between them. (England Before the Norman Conquest, Oman, 1910)
