AHRIMAN. Persian
name, derived from Sanskrit ari, meaning "foe." In
mythology, a deity of the ancient Persians, being a personification of the
principle of evil. To his agency were ascribed all the evils
existing in the world. Ormuzd, or Oromasdes, the principle of good,
is eternal, but Ahriman is created, and will one day perish. See Ormuzd.

AHRIMAN. In Zendic
mythology the great malevolent principle; the author of all evil,
physical and moral; the enemy of mankind, and the constant but not
eternal antagonist of Ahuramazda. He was sometimes considered to
have been the same as Agramainyus,
which see.
