ALARD.  Contracted form of Old High German Adelhard (q.v.), meaning "nobly firm."  Also spelled Alert. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)  Usage:  France, Germany, Holland.

     Alard, written also Adelard, a Dutch ecclesiastic, born at Amsterdam in 1490, was the author of several controversial works.
     Alard, Nicholas, a German biographer, born at Tönningen in 1683, wrote "Decas Alardorum Scriptis Clarorum," (1721.)  Died in 1756.
     Alard, Marie Joseph Louis, a French medical writer, born at Toulouse in 1779.  Died in Paris in 1850. (Universal Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography and Mythology, Thomas, 1908)
