Alfonso, a name of Visigothic or Vandalic origin, brought into Spain by one of these tribes from the southern shores of the Baltic, their original seat. (Notes and Queries, Jul-Dec, 1906)

Alfonso I, surnamed El Batallador (i.e. "the battler")  King of Aragon and Navarre, ascended the throne in 1104.  He fell in battle in 1134.  He had, it is said, previously defeated the Mohammedans in thirty-nine successive conflicts, and taken from them a much greater extent of territory than he had inherited from his ancestors.  He was succeeded by his brother, Ramiro II.
