... The Holy City of Islam is
made to appear in the same light thousands of years before the Prophet's
time: here, it is said, the Arabs were united in worship of Allah,
hence they scattered and fell into idolatry, hither they return annually
as pilgrims to a shrine which had been originally dedicated to the One
Supreme Being, but which afterwards became a Pantheon of tribal deities.
