ALPHÆUS. Biblical.
[Latin from Greek Alphaios, from Hebrew Hhalphi = "one who
passes" (?). Hhálaph = "to pass" (?).
Clopas, Cleophas].
(1) The
father of James the Less (Matt. x. 3; Mark iii. 18; Luke vi. 15; Acts i.
13). He was married to a certain Mary, and, in addition to James,
had another son Joses, and a daughter Salome (Matt. xxvii. 56; Mark xv.
40; Luke xxiv. 10). He was called also Clopas or Cleophas, which
reveals the fact that his wife was the sister of the Virgin Mary (cf.
Mark xv. 40 with John xix. 25).
(2) The father of Matthew or Levi (Mark ii. 14). (The
Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894).
