AMAETHON. Welsh
name derived from the vocabulary word amaethon, meaning
"agriculturist." (An
English-Welsh Pronouncing Dictionary, Spurrell, 1872).
Bury renders it "the divine husbandman," and provides the old
Celtic form Ambactonos.
See his note under Tigernonos.
(The
Cambridge Medieval History, Bury, v.2, 1913)
"Seest
thou that vast hill yonder? said Yspydaden to Kulhwch...
"I must have it rooted up from the ground, and
the grubbings burned for manure on the face of the land: I must
have it ploughed and sown in one day, and have it ripen in the space of
one day. Of that wheat it is that I must have food and liquor duly
made for the wedding of thee and my daughter...
"No husbandman can till or dress that land on
account of its tangled state except Amaethon son of Don: he will
not follow thee of his free will, and thou canst not force him... (Studies
in the Arthurian Legend, Rhys, 1891).
