AMATNIM. An
early Babylonian king, the predecessor of Sargina or Sargon II.
Nothing else is known respecting him. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
No. 124.
NUM. The head probably of a wolf. The cuneiform num, nim,
means "wolf," but is also used for "high,"
"heaven" (Samoyed num, heaven), and for num, to
engrave. (The Hittites
and Their Language, by Conder, 1898).
... Further light might be
thrown on the subject of the antiquity of 'amm as a relationship
term if it could be determined whether 'amm in Maltese belonged
to the early Semitic stratum of the language, or whether it is due to
more recent Arabic influence. Again, although 'amm does not
occur in Amharic, amat means father-in-law and
mother-in-law. The derivation of this term is also important, it
is possible that it may be derived from the Assyrian root emu.
If, however, it was borrowed from Arabic, it must have been introduced
at a time when the marriage with the paternal uncle's daughter had
become customary and the word had already acquired the secondary meaning
of father-in-law that it now possesses in Arabia. (Phonetic
Transcriptions of Indian Languages, Smithsonian, v.66, #6, 1916).
