| AMENOPHIS (Ἀμήνὄφις). Greek
form of Egyptian Amon-hotep
(q.v.), meaning "peace of Amon." Amenophis, an
Egyptian king, whose history as it is transmitted to us by the Greek
writers is inconsistent with that of any recorded Amenhotep. The
Jewish historian Josephus attributed the oppression of the Israelites and
the Exodus to a monarch of this name; but his conjecture is not supported
by historical testimony. If there were any basis for the theory, it
would be derived from the strongly Semitic form of worship introduced by
Amenhotep IV., or Khuenaten,
which see. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
King Amenophis
built him a tomb,
Down in the desert's sandy womb,
Where he might lie, with a slave or two,
To spare him labors the dead must do,
King Amenophis!
(Wraiths and
Realities, Rice, 1918)
