ANEBOS. The
form in which the name of the city of Nipur is recorded as that of a king,
by the historian Moses of Khorene.
(An Archaic Dictionary,
Cooper, 1876). The name of an Egyptian priest and prophet (see
below).
.. Porphyry is, nevertheless,
charged with inconsistencies and contradictions; his later views being
frequently at variance with his earlier ones. The reason of this may
probably be found in the vacillation of his views with respect to theurgy
and philosophy... These doubts he set forth in a letter to the Egyptian
prophet Anebos, in a series of questions... The letter to Anebos called
forth a reply, which is still extant, and known under the title Περι Μυστηριων,
and is the production probably of Iamblichus... (Cyclopaedia
of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature, McClintock,
v.8, 1894).
