ANHUR. "That
which brings to Heaven."
An Egyptian deity who is always
represented as in a marching attitude, and robed with a long dress.
He wears a headdress of four plumes, with the usual uræus serpent of
celestial deity. He holds a cord in his hands, which is supposed to
symbolise one of the forces of the universe. He was a form also of
the solar god Shu, and in that character he had for his consort the
goddess Tefnut, the Heavenly Cow. He was the Anouris, or Egyptian
Mars, of the Greek writers. Anhur was chiefly worshipped in the
city and nome of Abot, which was situated in the Eastern bank of the
Nile, in the Thebaid, and was afterwards called by the Greeks Thinites. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper,
1876).
