ANIR. Arthurian
legend name of a son of king Arthur. Perhaps from Greek aner,
meaning "a man."
... There is a wonder found in
the region called Ercing. Near a fountain there is a funeral mound
named Licat Anir, in memory of Anir, the son of Arthur. Arthur
himself is said to have slain the youth and buried him. Men who
come to measure the mound find it sometimes six feet long, sometimes
nine, sometimes fifteen, but never twice alike. "And I have
tried it," says Nennius ("et ego... probavi").
Whether it was before or after dinner, the monk does not say. (The
Arthur of the English Poets, Maynadier, 1907)
