ANNIBAL.
Carthaginian
form of Phnician Chanbaal
(q.v.), meaning "favor of Baal." (Praenomina,
Charnock, 1882)
Annibal, a celebrated
Carthaginian general, son of Amilcar. He was educated in his
father's camp, and inured from his early years to the labours of the
field. He passed into Spain when nine years old, and at the
request of his father, took a solemn oath he never would be at peace
with the Romans. He died in his 70th year, according to some,
about 182 years B.C. The Romans have celebrated the humanity of Annibal, who, after the battle of Cannæ, sought the body of the fallen
consul [Æmilius] amidst the heaps of slain, and honoured it with a
funeral becoming the dignity of Rome. (A Classical Dictionary, Lemprière,
1831)
