ANTOR. Arthurian. Possibly a corruption of Arthur
(q.v.), also of uncertain derivation, possibly meaning "bear,"
or "high."
Antor, Anthor (Arntor, Auctor,
Artus), father of Kex, Artus's seneschal, and foster-father of Artus,
II, 74-77; 80; 83-85; 89; 90; 92; 102; 105; 111; 117; 128; 148; 153;
156; VII, 12; 15; 37; 47; 49; 53; 55; 56; 60; 64; 133; 138; 139; sa feme,
75; 77; 90; son fil, see Kex, Keu.
In the MSS. No. 748, 105 and 9123 and in several
others at the Bibliotheque Nationale, Add. 32, 125. British
Museum, Antor is consistently named Artus.—I believe Robert de Borron
gave the same name Arthur to Artus
and his foster-father, and that the
forms Auctor, Arntor, Anthor are corruptions of Arthur, a form still to
be found in many French MSS. (Index to the Vulgate Version of
the Arthurian Romances, Sommer, 1916).
