Etymology of the
Meaning of the baby name APRIES.
APRIES (Ἀπρίης). Herodotus's
form of the Egyptian Uahprahet
(q.v.), meaning "the sun enlarges his heart." In the
bible, the name is Hophra.
(An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
CLXI. Ἐξεδέξατο Ἀπρίης]
Apries succeeded him. The name Apries seemed to me a word of the
Ionian dialect; for Athenaeus, in translating into the ordinary dialect a
passage from Ctesias, renders it by Aprias. But I find the word
written in Diodorus Siculus, as it is in Herodotus. (Larcher's Notes on
Herodotus, v.1, 1829).
