| ARGISTIS. King
of Ararat, the son of Minua, king of Ararat or Armenia. He induced
Mutallu, king of Kummutha or Commangene, to revolt against Sargon II., but
when the Assyrians approached he deserted both his friend and his kingdom,
and fled from his country, which was ravaged and annexed by the
Assyrians. Recovering from this defeat he greatly enlarged the
kingdom, even in turn invading Assyria for that purpose. This led to
a long war with Shalmaneser III., who compelled him to retire into the
mountains as a tributary, after a conflict extending over eight years.
