ARMINIUS. Latin
name, meaning "public; universal."
When the Cheruschi, themselves
Herminiones, broke the heart of Augustus by cutting off the legions of
Quinctilius Varus, their leader was Arminius, probably Irman or
Eorman,
though after-generations explained it as Heerman or Armyman. So that
the hosts of Hermans, named when national feeling was roused by French
invasion, are in his honour; previously, the Dutch Jacob Hermannsen had
rendered himself into Latin as Arminius. (History of
Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
