ARNAS. Latinized
form of Old Norse Arni (q.v.), meaning
"eagle." Arne
is a Dutch form.
Arni-Magnusson, [Lat. Arnas
Magnæus,] and eminent archæologist of Iceland, born in 1663,
studied at Copenhagen, where he subsequently became professor of history
and antiquities. He was sent to Iceland, in 1702, by Frederick IV.,
and, during a residence of ten years in that country, made a large and
valuable collection of manuscripts. The Arna-Magnaean Commission,
having for its object the publication of these works, was named in his
honour. Died in 1730. (Universal Pronouncing Dictionary of
