ATALLAH (عطاالله).
Arabic name meaning "a look-out place." (Names and
Their Histories, Taylor, 1898)
The Druzes then said, "There
is no (true) religion but the religion of the English." A man
named Fares Atallah then came forward, and wished to inquire for
information about the leper to whom Christ said, Go show thyself to the
priest, and about other things like that... (Missionary Herald,
v.46,
1849)
"The history and origin of
Toledo is contemporary with the creation of the world." O'Shea
says so, but does not add we are to believe it. King Tartus
established a colony here "por viâ de Ingla-terra."
The Jews named it Toledoth—City of Generations; hence atallàh, in Arabic
and Spanish, a place of look-out. Nebuchadnezzar, Hercules, and
Thubal settled down here, but got away in time for "the Archbishop
Don Rodrigo to assign the foundation of the city "146 B.C.," and
to allow St. Eugenius to introduce Christianity. The Goth Wamba made
the place prosperous and wealthy. (Rambla-Spain, Bell, 1883)
