Bulgarian form of Greek Athanasios
(q.v.), meaning "undying."
"Some
days after the search Atanas and Vladi were summoned by the police and
asked to tell what they knew of the revolutionary organization in the
city. Of course, they denied any knowledge at all.
"'You are foolish to hide them,'" said the
chief of police, 'they have condemned you to death.' And he showed
them the ash of the letter to the Central Committee, demanding a death
judgment against certain persons. Only two names were legible;
