variant form of Athalagild
(q.v.), and renders both names "noble pledge."
Grimm connects Gothic names
beginning with Athan-/Athana- with ažna- (year). And
there is a Lithanian word giltis, meaning "death."
Could this name have been first given to someone born in a
"year of death"?
... Perhaps Grimm was right in
connecting Athanaric, Athanagild with ažna- "year"; if so, it
was possible that "Jornandes" (the name given in sum MSS. to the
historian Jordanis) was properly "Jernanps," the first element
being from the same word as our "year." (Transactions of
the Philological Society, 1887)
