ATHANARIC. Variant
of Gothic Athanareiks,
possibly meaning "noble ruler." See Athanareiks
and Athanagild.
"NOTE.—Although it has
been generally, and almost tacitly, assumed, since the publication of
Waitz's MS., that the 'irreligiosus et sacrilegus judex,' by whom Ulfilas
was persecuted and forced to quit the country of the Wisigoths in 348 (355
according to Waitz's own chronology), was no other than Athanaric, yet it
must be pointed out that there is no direct evidence for the
identification; in fact, the evidence in this case is no more complete
than that which connects Ulfilas with the 'presbyter Christiani ritus' of
the negotiations before the battle of Adrianople." (Ulfilas,
Apostle of the Goths, Scott, 1885)
