AVARDDWY. In
Britain, Mandubrath
(the man of black treason) is called Avarddwy Bras. Welsh arddwy
means "management, rule." (A Dictionary of the Welsh Language,
Pughe, 1832). If the prefix Av- is Ap- "son
of," then the name means "son of a ruler."
... It is said that Caswallon
had murdered Avarddwy's father, and afterwards set out on what the Triads
call one of the three unwise armaments, which weakened the force of the
country... (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
Avarddwy Bras was, no doubt, that
Mandubratius, a chief of the
Trinobantes, whom Caesar expressly notices as having deserted the
Britons and come over to him in Gaul some time before his second
invasion, a circumstance that well accords with the narration here given
of his treacherous conduct. The cause, assigned by the Roman
historian for this act of Mandubratius, is the murder of his father by
Caswallawn or Cassivellaunus... (Letters on Welsh History,
Jenkins, 1852)
