Yoruba name derived from the vocabulary word alála, meaning
"a dreamer." (A Dictionary of the Yoruba
Language, Church Missionary Society, 1913). ALALA
(Ἀλαλά). f.
Greek
name of a sister of Ares, meaning "battle-cry." This is
also another name for the Assyrian goddess Allat
("the goddess"), which see. She was one of the forms of Ishtar
(q.v.). (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
ALALA. m.
The
name of a deity in Babylonian-Assyrian religion. Consort of Belili
(q.v.), he is mentioned on a cuneiform tablet as one of the ancestors of
the well-known deities. The name is found in incantations. He
is perhaps to be connected with the bird Alallu, mentioned in the Gilgamesh
epic (q.v.). (Encyclopedia Britannica, Chambers, v.1, 1910). Alallu
means "a bundle."
