| AMAL (امل). Unisex.
Arabic name, derived from the vocabulary word amal, meaning "hope."
(An English and Arabic Dictionary, Catafago, 1873)
AMAL (עָמָל). Unisex.
Strictly masculine in the Bible. [Hebrew = "heavy labour,"
"sorrow"]. An Asherite, a son of Helem (1 Chron. vii. 35).
(The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
AMAL. m.
Teutonic masculine name, of Teutonic origin, from amal,
meaning "labor, work."
Amal is a very remarkable
word. We have had it in Greek, as Αὶμύλος; in Latin, as Æmilius; in
the Keltic as Amalgaidh; and in all it would seem as if one notion could
be detected—that of work. Even in Hebrew Amal means to work; aml is
work in old Norse; and we have still our verb to moil, taken
therefrom. (History of Christian Names,
Yonge,
1884)
