| ANUNNAKI. A
Babylonian-Assyrian religious term. The derivation of the word is
doubtful. It has been interpreted "gods of the earth" and "gods of the watery
habitation." In any case, the Anunnaki are a group of gods or
spirits employed in the service of other gods. They are spirits of
earth, while the spirits of heaven receive the name Igigi
(q.v.). They figure in the Babylonian Creation and Deluge stories. (An
