APALA.  m.  Native American name, derived from the Muskogeh word apala, meaning "the great sea" or "the great ocean."  The tribe applied this name to the king of England. (The Historical Magazine, v.6, 1862) 

APALA.  f.  Feminine form of Basque Apal (q.v.), meaning "humble."  It is also a Basque word for the mantle over a fire-place.

    In Hindu folklore, Apala is a nymph who suffers from a terrible skin disease.  In the legend of Brihaddevata, Apala asks of Indra to make her a magnificent and perfect skin.  Indra passes over her with the wheels, the car, and the helm three times, and by these means succeeds in removing her skin disease which had covered her...
