BEBBA.
Pet form of Swiss Elsbeth,
meaning "God's oath." (Yonge) The only occurrence of
this name I can find, is that of a mysterious Saxon queen of Northumberland.
Very little is known about her.
Bamburgh, or Bamborough, on the
coast of Northumberland, stands on a mass of basaltic rock frowning over
the sea, and approachable only by steps cut in the precipice. The
name appears as Beban-burh and Bebba-burh in the Saxon Chronicle. It
was the fortress and capital of Ida, the Flame-bearer, and is said by
Bæda to bear the name of a Queen Bebba or Bebbe, probably not the
Queen of Ida, but, as we are told by Nennius, the Queen of Ædilfrid, the
grandson of Ida. (Taylor)
