BLANCHEFLOUR. Early
English form of Arthurian Blanchefleur
(q.v.), meaning "white flower."
... Floris and Blancheflour,
is supposed to have been derived through the French from Oriental
sources; but no specific tale has yet been identified... On the whole,
while an Oriental tale may have existed in regard to this Earthly
Paradise, I incline to think that Floris and Blancheflour
represents only a French story of young lovers similar to Aucassin
and Nicolete, that arose probably in the south of France and was
early blended with travellers' tales from the Orient... (Early
English Romances in Verse, Rickert, 1908)
