BAGDEMAGUS. Arthurian
legend name of the father of Meleagant. It appears to be an Arabic
name; compare Muhammed Bagdedinus. (Bulletin of the American
Mathematical Society, v.22, Oct. 1915 thru July 1916). Bagde/Baghde
might be "Baghdad." Bagh means
"garden." Magus means "a magician; one of the
magi or Magians," wise men of the ancient Medes and Persians.
Therefore, possibly, "Baghdad magician" or "garden
magician." (The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia, Whitney,
1911)
... Sir Launcelot descended to
where Elouise was, and he found that a fair supper had been set for his
refreshment. So he sat and ate, and Elouise the Fair herself
served him.
The theme, used by Malory in his nineteenth book, is
the rape of Guenevere from the court by a certain Meleagant, son to King
Bagdemagus of Gorre, and her rescue by Lancelot... Lancelot conquers
Meleagant, but gets scant reward; for the queen treats him cruelly, when
they meet... (Le morte Darthur of Sir Thomas Malory, Scudder,
1921)
