BALDRICH. Variant of Old
High German Balderich,
meaning "prince ruler." (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884).
The kingdom of Bisinus was
divided between his sons, Hermanfried, Berthar, and Baldrich; the
first of whom married Amalberga, the daughter of Dietrich the Ostrogoth.
This wily princess contrived, by half covering his table, in sign of his
only possessing half a kingdom, to rouse the ambition of her husband,
who surprised and killed Berthar, and in order to strengthen himself
against Baldrich, who was more on his guard, entered into an alliance
with Theodorich, king of Austrasia, by whom Baldrich was subsequently
defeated and slain. Hermanfried afterwards refusing to divide his
ill-won kingdom with the Franks, they united with the Saxons and
defeated him in a pitched battle near Scheidingen [A.D.
529]. (The History of Germany, Menzel, v.1, 1848)
